Thrust Ball Bearings
Single and Double Direction, 51100 to 52300

Pump, spindle or steering gear taking load along the shaft? Tell us the bore and the direction of thrust and we will quote from stock. We hold the 51100, 51200, 51300 and 51400 single direction series and the 52200 and 52300 double direction series, 10 mm to 260 mm, with flat or self-aligning spherical seat washers. A thrust ball bearing is built the other way round to a radial bearing — two grooved washers with a ball and cage between them, carrying axial load rather than radial.

What Are Thrust Ball Bearings?

Dedicated Axial Load Support for Rotating Shafts

A thrust ball bearing consists of two grooved washers — a shaft washer and a housing washer — with a ball-and-cage assembly running between them. This design sets it apart from a standard radial bearing: a radial bearing carries load perpendicular to the shaft, while a thrust bearing is built specifically to carry axial (thrust) load along the shaft axis, and is not meant to support radial load.

A Single Direction Thrust Ball Bearing supports thrust in one direction only and is the most widely used configuration. A Double Direction Thrust Ball Bearing uses a shared central shaft washer between two housing washers, allowing it to support thrust load from both directions on the same shaft — commonly used where the shaft experiences reversing loads.

Aligning Seat (Spherical Washer)

A variant with a spherical housing washer seat that self-aligns to compensate for shaft misalignment or housing squareness error, preventing uneven ball loading and premature failure.

  • Compensates for installation misalignment
  • Paired with a matching spherical seat washer
  • Recommended where perfect perpendicularity cannot be guaranteed
  • Available in 51200 and 51300 series

Cylindrical & Tapered Bore

Standard cylindrical bore thrust ball bearings for straight shaft mounting, plus tapered-bore variants for interference-fit mounting without a separate sleeve.

FAQ

Thrust Ball Bearing FAQs

What is a thrust ball bearing used for?
A thrust ball bearing carries pure axial (thrust) loads and is used where a shaft must be located against end-thrust — for example pump shafts, machine-tool spindles, steering mechanisms, crane hooks and turntables. It is not designed to carry radial load.
What is the difference between a radial bearing and a thrust bearing?
A radial bearing is designed to carry load perpendicular to the shaft, while a thrust bearing carries load along the shaft axis. Where an application has both radial and axial loads, an angular-contact ball bearing or taper roller bearing is typically used instead of a pure thrust bearing.
What is the difference between single direction and double direction thrust ball bearings?
A single direction thrust ball bearing (51100/51200/51300 series) supports axial load in one direction only, consisting of a shaft washer, housing washer, and ball-and-cage assembly. A double direction thrust ball bearing (52200/52300 series) shares a central shaft washer between two housing washers, supporting axial loads from both directions on the same shaft.
Can a thrust ball bearing carry radial load?
No. Thrust ball bearings are designed for pure axial load only and cannot support meaningful radial load. If an application has combined radial and axial loads, a taper roller bearing or angular contact ball bearing is the correct choice.
Do you supply stainless steel thrust bearing options?
Yes — stainless steel thrust bearing variants are available for pumps, food-grade, and marine applications requiring corrosion resistance.
Which brands of thrust ball bearings do you supply?
SKF, FAG, NTN, NSK, NACHI, KOYO and TIMKEN — all genuine, with dispatch within 24 hours on common sizes from Mumbai.
How should a thrust ball bearing be mounted?
The tighter-fitting shaft washer sits on the rotating shaft, and the housing washer sits against the stationary housing. Correct orientation and a minimum axial load are needed for proper operation.
What is an aligning seat (spherical washer) thrust bearing used for?
An aligning seat thrust bearing has a spherical housing washer that self-aligns to compensate for shaft misalignment or housing bore squareness error — used where perfect perpendicularity between shaft and housing cannot be guaranteed.
Do you supply thrust ball bearings for vertical pump applications?
Yes. We regularly supply 51100 and 51200 series thrust ball bearings for vertical pump and motor applications where the bearing supports the weight of the rotating assembly. Share your pump make, model, or existing bearing part number for a same-day quote.
What is the difference between a thrust ball bearing and a thrust roller bearing?
Thrust ball bearings suit lighter axial loads at higher speeds — pumps, spindles, steering assemblies. Thrust roller bearings (cylindrical, spherical or tapered) use line contact instead of point contact, giving them much higher axial load capacity at lower speeds, so they're used in gearboxes, cranes, and heavy machine bases. If your application has both heavy axial load and low speed, a thrust roller bearing is usually the better fit.
