Industry studies consistently attribute a large share of premature bearing failures to lubrication problems — the wrong grease, too much or too little of it, contaminated grease, or two incompatible greases mixed in the same housing. The bearing is rarely the part that was defective.
Grease is base oil held in a thickener, with additives for load capacity, oxidation resistance and corrosion protection. It is the base oil that does the lubricating; the thickener acts as a reservoir that releases it as the bearing runs. Getting base oil viscosity right for the speed and temperature matters more than the brand on the tin.

Most grease failures are specification failures, not product failures. A simple lithium grease in a kiln roller will not survive; an NLGI 3 in a slow, cold conveyor will not flow to the contact. Tell us the application and the bearing type and we will specify the grade — or work through it yourself below.

One caution worth reading before you order. Simple lithium grease has a dropping point around 185 °C and should not run above roughly 120 °C continuously or under heavy load — the margin is not there. If your operating temperature is anywhere near that figure, the price difference between lithium and lithium complex is far smaller than one unplanned bearing change.
Soft, closer to a heavy oil. Used where the grease has to travel — centralised lubrication lines, long feed pipes, cold ambient conditions and slow-speed plain bearings.
The standard consistency, and what the great majority of rolling bearings take. This is what we dispatch unless you tell us otherwise.
Stiffer. For high-speed bearings where softer grease would be thrown off the contact, sealed-for-life units, and hot duty such as kilns and oven conveyors where leakage must be prevented.
The grade only describes stiffness. The base oil matters just as much: ISO VG 100–220 covers most general industrial bearing duty. Slow and heavily loaded wants heavier, fast and lightly loaded wants lighter.
Changing from one grease to another? Purge at operating speed until only fresh grease shows at the relief, or strip, clean and repack. Tell us what is in the housing now and we will confirm whether the new grease can go on top of it.
