A plummer block — also called a split pillow block or SNL housing — is a two-piece cast iron or steel housing that carries a spherical or cylindrical roller bearing. Unlike a standard one-piece pillow block, the split cap on a plummer block housing can be removed for inspection, relubrication, or bearing replacement without disturbing the shaft, making it the preferred choice for large, hard-to-remove shafts in heavy industrial equipment. Most plummer block bearings run on a tapered bore, so they are mounted using either an adapter sleeve for bearings positioned away from the shaft end, or a withdrawal sleeve for bearings near the shaft end that need to slide off during removal, with a locknut and lockwasher securing the sleeve in place.

Tapered sleeves that mount a spherical roller bearing onto a plain cylindrical shaft, positioned away from the shaft end. The sleeve is tightened using a locknut, creating a secure interference fit on the shaft.
