A plummer block — also called a split pillow block or SNL housing — is a two-piece cast iron or steel housing that carries a spherical or cylindrical roller bearing. Unlike a standard one-piece pillow block, the split cap on a plummer block housing can be removed for inspection, relubrication, or bearing replacement without disturbing the shaft, making it the preferred choice for large, hard-to-remove shafts in heavy industrial equipment. Most plummer block bearings run on a tapered bore, so they are mounted using either an adapter sleeve for bearings positioned away from the shaft end, or a withdrawal sleeve for bearings near the shaft end that need to slide off during removal, with a locknut and lockwasher securing the sleeve in place.

Two-piece cast iron plummer block housing for spherical roller bearings mounted on adapter or withdrawal sleeves. This is the industry-standard heavy-duty plummer block used on large shafts across cement, steel, and mining plants. Bore sizes 20mm to 500mm.
The SN series covers lighter and mid-range shaft sizes, while the SD series is built for the heaviest loads found in steel mills and large gearboxes. The SAF series is a cast steel foot-mounted plummer block housing used where extra rigidity and shock resistance are required. All three follow the same split-cap principle as SNL housings.

The most common ordering mistake on split housings, and how to avoid it.
For a plain shaft with no shoulder. The tapered sleeve slides on, the bearing pushes up the taper, and a locknut draws it tight. Simple, and it lets you position the bearing anywhere along the shaft. This is what most conveyor and fan installations use.
For a stepped shaft where the bearing seats against a shoulder. The sleeve is driven in between shaft and bearing rather than under it. Easier to remove on large sizes, which matters when the bearing is 200 mm and the shaft is not coming out of the machine.
Tightening by feel is where most premature failures start. Too little and the inner ring creeps on the sleeve; too much and you close the internal clearance and the bearing runs hot. Work to the manufacturer's drive-up figure or reduction in clearance — ask us for it when you order.
SNL is the current SKF metric range and the one to specify for new work. SN is the older metric designation, still common on installed plant. SAF is the inch-series equivalent, usually found on imported American machinery. We stock all three, so an old housing can be matched.
